Greensboro – With a high jump of 6 feet, 4 inches, Logan Shuler of Andrews won his second straight 1A state championship Friday.
Athletes from across the state traveled to Marcus T. Johnson Track & Field in Greensboro to compete in the state championship Friday.
Andrews, Murphy, Hiwassee Dam and Tri-County Early College all had athletes competing in the state meet.
Along with Shuler, William Wood of Andrews also had a good performance at the state meet. Wood competed in discus and came in third place with a throw of 156 feet 9 inches.
Wood’s third place throw at the state meet broke the Andrews High School record by 11 inches. He broke his own record as he was already the current school record holder after his first record-breaking throw earlier in the season.
Also competing from Andrews were Myca Mustin who came in 12th in the triple jump and Kylie Donaldson who came in ninth in the long jump. The Andrews girls relay team came in 11th in the 4x100-meter relay.
Ethan Russell of Hiwassee Dam competed in both the 1,600m and 3,200m events. He came in third place in the 3,200m with a time of 10:07.19. He also came in fifth in the 1,600m with a time of 4:26.34 to cap off a season of strong finishes in the distance running events.
Murphy High School had two athletes qualify for the state meet. Cale Harger came in ninth place in the long jump, while Ansley Roper came in 13th place in discus.
Fern Crayton of Tri-County Early College qualified for the state championship in the 3,200m run. Her time of 12:06.84 earned her a fifth-place finish.
In the teams points totals, Andrews boys finished tied for 13th with 16 points. Russell’s performance earned Hiwassee Dam boys 10 points, which resulted in a tied for 22nd-place team points finish. Crayton’s finish earned Tri-County four points and a 32nd-place finish in the team points total.
