Brasstown – Mother Nature tried to get in the way of yet another race, but the determination of the staff and racers at Tri-County Racetrack allowed them to finally return to the track Friday night.
For the first time since April 18, race cars were back on track at “the hidden gem.” Rain canceled races on May 10, May 24 and May 26.
The festivities included previously postponed events, such as the Mother’s Day gift basket giveaway and fireworks postponed from the May 26 Memorial Day race.
Another thing left over was prize money that drivers got to enjoy for winning in different classifications.
In the Late Models classification, there was $1,500 to win. Dante Curtis of Murphy took home the biggest paycheck Friday night.
Curtis got the win after getting pole position. David McCoy of Franklin came in second, while Barrett Lowe of Fletcher finished third.
In front-wheel drive, there was $1,000 to win, and Christopher Kane of Murphy took home the prize.
Kane won from pole position. Shannon Jones of Hayesville came in second, while Phillip Hall of Andrews finished third.
In 604 Late Model, Junior Whitener also took home $1,000 for his win. Whitener of Blue Ridge, Ga., moved his way up to the front after qualifying in fourth place. Jacob Parris of Epworth, Ga., came in second, while Dakota Green of Blue Ridge, Ga., came in third.
In 602 Late Models, there was also $1,000 up for grabs, and Cooper Twiggs took it home. Twiggs, who graduated from Hiwassee Dam High School on May 31, qualified in fourth and
RACING, page 2Bmoved his way up to get the win.
Dylan Beaver of Murphy came in second, while Michael Barnett of Hayesville finished third.
In A modified, there was $500 to win and Matt Sandefur of Mineral Bluff, Ga., secured the prize.
Sandefur qualified at pole position and got the win. Gabe Wilson of Waynesville came in second, while Brawley Stillwell of Andrews finished in third.
In street stocks, there was also $500 to win. Charles Devine of Murphy got the win and took home the money. Devine qualified in third and worked his way to the front of the pack to get the win.
Dylan Hannah of Clyde came in second, while Matt Whitener of Canton finished third.
In the Crown Vic classification, Zack Meinders of Liberty, S.C., got the win and took home $200. Jim Exum of Murphy moved his way up from fourth to finish in second place. Chance Watson of Blue Ridge, Ga., came in third place.
Racing will return to Tri-County Racetrack on Friday night for the Father’s Day Showdown race. Tri-County Racetrack will also welcome the pony classification to the track for the first time this season at Friday night’s race.
In the pony classification, MMSA and MS4MA are both welcome. Late Models, 602 Late Models, 604 Late Models, front wheel drive, open wheel and street stock racing will also be in action at the track.
Pits open at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 4 p.m. and hot laps begin at 7 p.m. Pit tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for kids 11-15 and free for ages 10 and under. Grandstand tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for ages 11-15 and free for ages 10 and under.
