Andrews – James Phillips stepped down as head coach of the Andrews High School varsity football team Monday afternoon.
He spoke with the team and coaches Monday afternoon and informed them he would be resigning from his position as head coach of the Wildcats. His goal of the meeting was to be transparent and let them know in person.
He said two of the main reasons for stepping down were his health and recovery from recent back operations, as well as the pursuit of his doctorate with the goal of serving schools at the district level. He added that he wants to give the team 100% each season and feels he cannot do so this season due to his recovery.
Phillips coached the team starting in the 2016 season, when he took over at the helm for the Wildcats. His first winning year with the Wildcats came in 2020 during the shortened COVID-19 season, which was their first winning season since 2011.
During the 2022 season, Phillips coached the Cats to a 13-1 season, when they went an undefeated 5-0 in the SMC, winning the
conference.
During Phillips’ time as head coach, the Cats made the playoffs seven times.
