Winston-Salem – Murphy sophomore Jordan Oliver won the 55-meter wheelchair dash at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A state championships at the JDL Fast Track on Friday.
Oliver completed the race in 38.04 seconds. She also placed second in the wheelchair shot put with a throw of 7 feet, 3½ inches. Pender senior Daisy Hearn placed first, breaking her own 1A/2A meet record with a throw of 9 feet, 11 inches.
Murphy senior Faith Ann Revis was the only other Cherokee County athlete to qualify for the meet, placing eighth in the triple jump (33 feet, 1 inch), 11th in the shot put (27 feet, 6.75 inches) and 20th in the long jump (13 feet, 2.5 inches).
Robbinsville and Swain County were the other Smoky Mountain Conference teams to have athletes qualify. The Lady Devils won their first indoor track title in school history and Smoky Mountain Conference history by just one point over Community School of Davidson.
Swain County didn’t have any individual champions, but scored in six events.
Lady Knights sophomore Zoie Shuler won the state title in the long jump, placed second in the triple jump, fifth in the 55-meter dash and also ran on Robbinsville’s third-place 4x200-meter relay team.
