Ranger – Elementary school students celebrated the end of the school year with one of the most fun-filled days of the year, Field Day.
Stations were set up on the field at Ranger Elementary School under cloudy skies and a light drizzle that lasted most of the morning. Each class rotated through a series of games and activities throughout the morning.
The stations included water balloon toss and water balloon fight for the older kids, burlap sack race and tug of war, a relay where they had to fill a bucket with a wet sponge featuring the Culberson and Ranger fire departments, a relay where one kid had an empty bottle on their head and another kid had to use a water gun to fill it up, and a cone flip relay.
At the water balloon toss station, students forms two parallel lines and tossed a water balloon back and forth as gentle as possible. If the balloon broke, they were out.
Younger students also played a version of hot potato, where they made a circle and passed two water balloons around. If it fell, the person who dropped it was out.
Older students did the water balloon toss, then ended their time at the station with a water balloon fight. This station was led by Hiwassee Dam High School students Brock Hyde and Brinkley Payne.
The next station were the classic sack race and tug-of-war games. The classes formed relay teams for the sack race, and two teams went head to head in the tug of war.
Another station was a relay race, where they had to soak up water in a sponge, then run to one end and empty the sponge into the bucket. The team to fill their bucket the fastest won. This station turned into another student-favorite, as volunteers with the Culberson and Ranger fire departments were spraying water on the kids as they ran around.
At another water-based game, classes formed two teams and participated in a relay. A bottle with a hole cut in it was placed on one student’s head, and the team had to fill a water gun with water and try to fill their bottle.
Finally, there was a station that was their take on the viral water bottle flipping challenge. Small plastic cones were lined up, and relay teams had to flip the cones as fast as they could. The team to flip their cones and land them upright in the row won the game.
After students had gone through all the stations, they were treated to snow cones. Tiger’s Blood & Blue Raspberry were some of the favorite flavors students enjoyed.
The students at Ranger Elementary enjoyed one of their last days of the 2024-25 school year outside, as Field Day wrapped up another school year.
