With Mark Ware as the new director, Warriors Veteran Outreach is gearing up for the 11th annual 22 Hump to raise awareness for veteran suicide and veterans’ needs within Cherokee County on Saturday, April 26.
The walk will begin at 9 a.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m. Walkers will leave from behind The Mason Bar in downtown Murphy.
The walk will again span the 11-mile stretch between downtown Murphy and Marble along U.S. 19/74 East, then complete the return to Murphy. The “22” refers to the average number of U.S. military veterans who commit suicide every day.
The all-volunteer group comprising Warriors Veteran Outreach helps veterans from every
branch of service who live in Cherokee County. After a complete vetting process, the group fulfills material needs, from building wheelchair ramps to cutting fallen trees off fences during storms or other situations to providing assistance with groceries to providing a full tank of gas if the need is made known to them.
Warriors Veteran Outreach welcomes the public to volunteer. The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at their new location, the former Marine Corps League building at 4955 Airport Road in Andrews. There are no dues or fees for joining the group.
