Wachacha retains seat, Smoker wins in tribal elections

A new face will represent Tutiyi/Tsalagi Gadugi (Snowbird/Cherokee County) on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ Tribal Council.

Incumbent Adam Wachacha was the top vote-getter for the two local spots in the Sept. 4 general election – obtaining 213 nods of approval – but Michael Smoker unseated incumbent Bucky Brown to secure the second representative slot. Smoker collected 185 votes to Brown’s 174; Janell Rattler was close behind, with 173.

Elections for the council occur on a two-year cycle; there are 12 spots at the table. This year’s race also included school board races in Birdtown and Wolftown. A total of 5,563 votes were cast in the election.

Results will be certified during a special council session, which will be held no later than Tuesday, Sept. 30. Inauguration Day is Monday, Oct. 6.
