Peachtree – Hatred and animosity on social media inspired what Eric Van Hall hopes will be a new Cherokee County
tradition.
He, along with several other members of the community, are planning the first Hometown Christmas Celebration. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, in Tri-County Community College’s Enloe building. They hope that gathering people to volunteer and learn different traditions will help bring together people with differences.
The event will include a meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, a roll, dessert and beverage. There will also be a present for everyone in attendance, along with a visit from Santa Claus.
“We need volunteers to come eat, and volunteers to come help,” Van Hall said.
Volunteers are needed for many aspects of the event – decorations, serving meals, set up and break down. The group also plans to pack meals to bring to homebound elderly in the community, and volunteers will be needed to deliver those meals.
“There’s a place for everybody to volunteer,” Van Hall said.
The event is free and open to everyone – all ages and incomes throughout the county. He said not only are they hoping to bring people together, but they would like to
reach people who cannot afford a holiday meal.
“Not only are volunteers getting to meet each other, but hopefully we’re filling a need,” Van Hall said. “We’d like
this to become a big event for the entire community.”
The next meeting of the group is 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at Murphy Town Hall. Anyone wishing to volunteer may attend the meeting or contact Kathi Van Hall, Tim Radford at WKRK or Murphy Mayor Rick Ramsey.
