Schools provide military, law enforcement career exploration

Body

Marble – Cherokee County Schools is meeting needs of students and the community with a Law Enforcement/Military Fair from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at The Oaks Academy.
The district’s career development coordinators – Lauren Gentry for middle schools, Meredith Davis for high schools – developed the fair after learning students were interested in finding out more about those careers, and there is a need for law enforcement officers in the area.    “I want them to know they have options available locally,” Gentry said.
“It’s just exposure,” Davis said. “It’s really just opening up their world.”
In their training as career development coordinators, they were encouraged to find creative ways to help students explore careers and expose students to different career paths.
The fair will include representatives from every branch of the military, Andrews Police Department, Murphy Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. Highway Patrol, N.C. Wildlife Commission, School Resource Officers, probation officers and drug task force officers. Each will have a booth to help show the students information.
The fair is open to all middle and high school students in Cherokee County. Several students already have expressed interest, while others should contact their school’s guidance counselor or administrative assistant, or contact Gentry or Davis directly. Only students who are interested and have returned a permission slip will be bussed to The Oaks for the fair.
Permission slips already have started to be handed out to interested students. Parents may inquire about permission slips to Davis or Gentry, and return the slips directly to them.
The day is a half day of school and was chosen because it would least affect instructional time. The Oaks was chosen because it has the space for the fair and is a neutral location for all schools.
