Andrews — Town officials are moving forward with plans to repair the water and sewer treatment plants, which were damaged during lightning strikes last year.
The Andrews Board of Aldermen voted on March 10 to spend $28,976 to rebuild the electrical system at the water plant. They voted to spend another $28,823 to rebuild pumps at the sewer treatment plant.
The two plants were hit by lightning in March 2019. The insurance company denied the town’s claims to pay for repairs.
“After they denied our claims and appeals, the board decided to allocate money to make the repairs for safety reasons,” Mayor James Reid said. “We’re also taking measures to stop lightning strikes in the future. We’ve installed a $1,000 surge protection system at the water treatment plant, and we’re working on getting a surge protection plan for the sewer treatment plant.”
Aldermen also voted to amend the budget to cover $2,100 in penalties levied by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. OSHA officials penalized the town for issues related to the lightning strike at the water treatment plant and for employees not properly wearing protective masks while working around chlorine gas.
