‘A Flocking Good Thyme’
The Rotary Club of Murphy is set to hold its third annual Gobble Gallop from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Buck Bald Brewing. Billed as “the shortest race ever,” the event consists of a “Zero K Fun Run” which is also a fundraiser for Rotary’s mission to “End Polio Now.”
After the initial event began at Buck Bald Brewing in 2023, and following a move to Fain Alley last year, the gobblers return this year to Buck Bald’s new location at 110 Valley River Ave.
Club President Kadee Close said the event has become “a light-hearted fall tradition drawing Rotarians, friends and families together for a great cause and is sure to be ‘A Flocking Good Thyme.’
There is a $10 entry fee, and T-shirts will be available for $25. Sign-ups are available on the day of the event.

Library sets fundraisers
Friends of the Andrews Public Library held the first in a series of monthly fundraisers with a Chili Bingo Night from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday.
After the recent hot dog dinner and raffle at A&J Adventure & More Auction in August, Friends President Kelly Bryant said the group is looking to add more activities to increase interest in the group and the library. “We raised a little over $600 in August, and we’re excited about our fall and winter activities,” she said.
Bryant said the group plans to hold a monthly dinner or event and is featuring holiday T-shirts for
sale for everyone excited to get “booked for the holidays” before Christmas. This initiative ties in with the Nantahala Regional Library’s slogan of being “Relentlessly Resourceful” by inviting the public to see everything their local library offers.
Proceeds from the fundraisers will directly benefit Friends of the Andrews Public Library, which provides support to buy books, DVDs and other materials.

Mayor gets bigger voice
The Town of Murphy will have a stronger voice in major regional conversations that impact western North Carolina since Mayor Tim Radford has been appointed to serve as secretary of the Association of Tennessee Valley Governments, a partnership of nearly 1,000 counties and municipalities across seven states served by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

ATVG works on issues that directly affect communities like Murphy, including reliable and affordable TVA power, economic opportunities, emergency preparedness and infrastructure improvements. The Tennessee Valley region includes parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
As secretary, Radford will serve on ATVG’s Executive Committee, helping ensure that small towns have a seat at the table when big decisions are being discussed.
“This role isn’t about me, it’s about making sure Murphy and western North Carolina are represented,” he said in a release. “We face many of the same challenges as other rural communities in the Tennessee Valley, and working together gives us a stronger voice.”
Murphy’s involvement continues the town’s ongoing commitment to regional cooperation. Radford is
also chair of the Southwestern Commission Council of Governments as well as serves on the board of directors for the N.C. Mayors Association.
By participating in ATVG leadership, the Town of Murphy will be better positioned to advocate for local priorities, build new partnerships and pursue resources that help improve quality of life for residents.
