MURPHY

MAC certified destination

The Valley River Arts Guild at The Murphy Art Center has earned the prestigious Certified North Carolina Destination Business recognition after the nonprofit organization

completed a 21-month, three-part training program created by marketing expert Jon Schallert and sponsored by the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Main Street & Rural Planning Center.

The MAC has become well-known regionally for the guild’s many art programs, classes, huge local arts and crafts gallery, outdoor gallery known as the Murphy Art Xplosion and for the events volunteers produce each year.

The Certified North Carolina Destination Business designation gives The MAC and Town of Murphy a competitive edge in attracting more local and out-of-town customers into the area, while ensuring that customers who choose to visit and shop downtown will be enthralled.

This business designation for The MAC will also appear on N.C. Main Street Program’s Main-to-Main Trail map. The Main-to-Main Trail is an interconnected map of 72 designated Main Street downtown revitalization programs and one-of-a-kind businesses.

Holy Smoke set Thursday

Holy Smoke! It’s time to mark your calendar for Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until the food runs out at St. William Catholic Church.

The Holy Smoke fundraising dinner will be at the pavilion and support the Cherokee County Ministerial Association, which helps members of the community needing assistance. Area pastors will be cooking up some of their favorite potluck dishes as well as serving attendees at the dinner.

Adults are just $15 per plate, with ages 12 and under only $5.

“I am super excited about this year’s Holy Smoke. There are quite a few local churches, organizations and people participating. Besides a delicious meal and getting a chance to help the community, I think a fun time will be had by all,” said pastor Jonathan Hodges of Murphy Presbyterian Church.

The Andrews Board of Alderman voted Thursday to rescind the town’s road paving contract from Higdon Construction due to a “manpower” issue, according to Mayor James Reid.

The issue would not have allowed the project to begin this fall. Reid added that the contract was awarded to the next available bid, with Blake Ritz and Tom Frye, and is still scheduled for a fall start.
