Ranger – Race fans came together at Ranger Baptist Church on Feb. 29 for Pack 409’s first Pinewood Derby.
The Pinewood Derby is the wood car racing event of the Cub Scout Program of Scouting America. With the help of adults, Cub Scouts build their own unpowered, unmanned miniature cars from kits containing a block of pine wood, plastic wheels, stickers with numbers and metal axles.
Since its introduction in 1953, by Cubmaster (head of a Cub Scout Pack) Don Murphy in Manhattan Beach, Calif., the annual Pinewood Derby has become a nationwide sensation with more than 100 million Pinewood Derby cars purchased and built since its inception.
After church service, the congregation and race fans came together for a potluck lunch in the Family Life Center, provided by Ranger Baptist Church, followed by Pack 409 Pinewood Derby race.
Enthusiasm became a fevered pitch as the races started with crowd excitement increasing for crowd and family favorites as the cars were flying down the track.
Cub Scouting is a program chartered by Ranger Baptist Church of Murphy for boys and girls ages 5-10. If you are interested for your son or daughter to be part of the fun happening at Pack 409, contact Craig Hall at 678-995-2339 or cdh458@yahoo.com.
