New housing standards may raise Andrews' tax base

Andrews – The Andrews Board of Alderman approved minimum housing standards at the Aug. 14 meeting.

The new standards include:

  • Set minimum lot areas as 5,000 square feet;
  • Set lot areas per dwelling unit as 5,000 square feet;
  • Reducing minimum yard for front property to 10 feet;
  • Reducing minimum yard for back property to 10 feet.

These changes are to help increase the tax base within the town limits and help property owners “utilize their properties better and more,” Mayor James Reid said.

Town Finance Officer Ethan McCubbin said the standards apply only to single-family residences, which also “doesn’t include that many large lots in town. But, with these standards we hope to attract investors for lots within these standards to build new homes.”

Reid added that the new standards will help property owners with a lot of 20,000 square feet place more than one dwelling. The “single-family residence district doesn’t include very many lots, but the ones it does will benefit from this change.”
