Fire takes 2 mobile homes

Calls went out at about 7:15 p.m. Sept. 30 for multiple emergency personnel to respond to an address on Grape Thicket Road.

The emergency was for a single-wide trailer that was on fire with possible entrapment, and a second trailer beginning to catch fire as well. Tension could be heard across the radios as personnel were en route to the fire, with closer units arriving on the scene.

The area appeared chaotic yet organized as many firefighters, each with a task, were busy pulling hundreds of feet of multiple connected and heavy hoseline up a long, dark and rutted driveway to the blaze.

The scene was loud with running  equipment and verbal commands, the ground was wet and muddy and several neighborhood dogs were roaming about the scene. It was initially unclear as to weather or not someone was still inside one of the trailers, but it was later determined that no one was inside.

Several fire departments, Cherokee County Emergency Medical Services and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene. It took several hours to extinguish the fire, which  engulfed both trailers. At least one Martins Creek tanker left the scene to refill with additional water.

Meeting for a new auxiliary

The next meeting of the proposed Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the sheriff’s office, 577 Regal St.

The first meeting was
held on Aug. 28. Sheriff Dustin Smith and Capt. David Williams said the department is seeking to establish an auxiliary program to utilize volunteers in different ways.

The extra help will allow sheriff’s personnel to focus on providing other needed services. The auxiliary is divided into two programs:

  • Sheriff’s Volunteer Auxiliary Program – serving in clerical and support positions throughout the sheriff’s office.
  • Citizens Action Program – an enhanced mobile neighborhood watch program that reports suspicious activity and other duties.

Details: Call the office at 828-837-2589.
