From a jail to recovery
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office announces a major milestone in its Medication Assisted Treatment Program with the successful completion of its first warm handoff from the detention center directly to a local treatment program.
The individual transitioned into Renewed Hope, a one-year, four-phase recovery program that incorporates a 12-step model to support treatment and re-entry into the community.
The MAT Program, launched under Sheriff Dustin Smith’s administration and funded entirely by a grant from Dogwood Health Trust, is designed
to provide holistic assessment and referral services
for individuals in custody who struggle with substance use disorders. Rather than being released directly
back onto the streets,
program participants are connected to comprehensive, long-term treatment opportunities.
As part of this initiative, the sheriff’s office MAT clinician will provide weekly therapy to support participants in their recovery journey. This approach aims not only to reduce recidivism but also to empower individuals to break free from the cycle of substance abuse and lead productive, healthy lives.
“We want everyone in our community to be a success in defeating the cycle of substance abuse,” Smith said in a release. “You don’t have to look far to see the negative impact drugs have on lives and families. We want to help bring back your sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, from the brink. This program is making strides toward that goal.”

Meeting for a new auxiliary
The next meeting of the proposed Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the sheriff’s office, 577 Regal St.
The first meeting was
held on Aug. 28. Sheriff Dustin Smith and Capt. David Williams said the department is seeking to establish an auxiliary program to utilize volunteers in different ways.
The extra help will
allow sheriff’s personnel to focus on providing other needed services. The auxiliary is divided into two programs:
- Sheriff’s Volunteer Auxiliary Program – serving in clerical and support positions throughout the sheriff’s office.
- Citizens Action Program – an enhanced mobile neighborhood watch program that reports suspicious activity and other duties.
Details: Call the department at 828-837-2589.
