Candidates begin to file for election

    Murphy – The filing period for the 2020 election opened at noon Monday, with five local seats up for grabs next year.
    Cherokee County Board of Commissioners seats in Districts 2 and 5, as well as two seats for Cherokee County Board of Education in District 1 and one seat in District 2 will be contested in the 2020 elections. The Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor office is also up for re-election, but filing for that seat will not open until Monday, June 8, according to the State Board of Elections.
    Three Republicans filed at noon Monday, according to Leighsa Jones, director of elections:
    u Steve Coleman, chairman of the county GOP, running for county commissioner in District 5;
    u C.B. McKinnon, seeking re-election as county commissioner in District 2;
    u Jeff Tatham, seeking re-election as a school board member for District 1.
    County commission District 2 includes Marble and Peachtree, while District 5 includes Grape Creek, Hanging Dog, Hiwassee Dam and Unaka. School board District 1 includes Andrews, Marble and Topton, while District 2 includes Bellview, Brasstown, Hanging Dog, Grape Creek, Peachtree, Murphy and part of Unaka.
    The filing period for the election ends at noon Friday, Dec. 20. Primaries will be held Tuesday, March 3.
