Bulldogs outscored Tigers 50-0 Friday
Rosman – While it isn’t very often that you see a high football team drop 50 points in three quarters of action, it’s even less often that you see a team hit 50 points while completely shutting out the other team.
But on Friday night, that’s exactly what the Murphy Bulldogs did to the Rosman on the road, routing the Tigers to the tune of 50-0.
Sophomore running back Ty Laney started off the scoring for the Bulldogs in the opening quarter, punching in a nine-yard touchdown run.
Five minutes later, junior back Juan Allen blew away the Rosman defense with a 39-yard touchdown jaunt of his own.
Senior back Ray Rathburn would punch in the two-point conversion and the Bulldogs would take a 15-0 lead over the Tigers midway through the opening quarter.
Sophomore back John Ledford found paydirt on the Bulldogs’ following drive, scoring on a 24-yard rush to cap off Murphy’s 22-0 first quarter.
Laney and Allen would both find the end zone again in the second quarter, with Laney scoring on a 13-yard run and Allen punching in a five-yard scamper.
Laney punched another score in with 30 seconds remaining in the half, pushing the Bulldogs’ margin to 43-0 and giving the young back a first half “hat trick” of scores.
Senior back Isra Smith had the lone score of the second half for Murphy, tallying a touchdown on a long scoring run of 50-yards, while senior kicker Annie Kate Dalton finished perfect on the night on extra-point attempts at six-for-six.
On the defensive end of the football, senior Landon Jordan and sophomore Trendtyn Moss finished with 11 total tackles apiece, while Rathburn finished with a total of eight, including two for losses.
Murphy junior Payton McCracken came away with the Bulldogs’ lone takeway of the game on an interception and finished with four tackles in the victory.
Bulldog junior quarterback Kellen Rumfelt finished with 117 yards through the air on Friday, with 110 of them going to McCracken on a trio of catches.
Once again, Murphy finished without punting the ball a single time, tallying 22 first downs and holding the Tigers to just seven.
The Bulldogs now look ahead to their week six match up with the Cherokee Braves, who have found their two lone wins of the season against Swain County and against the Tigers.
