Murphy – On the Cherokee Scout’s list of 2026 resolutions is to find a new home for the local newspaper’s office.
“When we constructed our building in 2008, we added a second floor with extra office and storage space,” Scout Publisher David Brown said. “Today, including our former press plant, the space is almost three times larger than we what really need. So, for efficiency, we are going to sell our building and relocate.”
The sale of the building will not have an impact on the Scout’s day-to-day operations, which will continue as normal during and after the move, he said.
“We will be publishing the Cherokee Scout each week, just as we have since 1889,” Brown said. “The move won’t mean any change our weekly printing schedule.”
The local newspaper goes to press on Tuesdays, then is mailed on Wednesdays. The online e-edition is available earlier to subscribers.
The Scout will continue publishing from a new local office in the near future that better meets staff needs in producing each edition.
“We remain committed to serving the citizens of Cherokee and surrounding counties with the news and information they need and want to know,” Brown said. “The Scout traces its roots back to only one year after the first train arrived in Murphy, bringing newsprint to the Valley, and we’ve been sharing the stories of local residents ever since.”
The Scout building is at 89 Sycamore St. The press plant is around the corner at 110 S. Church St. Before then, the local newspaper’s office was at 20 Hickory St.
