Murphy police officers last week had the pleasure of visiting schools to celebrate Read Across America Day.
Celebrated each year on March 2 in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Read Across America Day highlights the importance of reading and encourages young students to develop a lifelong love of books and learning. Events like this give officers the opportunity to spend time with local students, share a few great stories and build positive relationships with youth in the community.
“We would like to extend a big thank you to the teachers, staff, and students at Murphy Elementary School, Peachtree Elementary School and Andrews Elementary School for welcoming our officers into your classrooms,” a release from the department says.
Meanwhile, Cherokee County Sheriff Chris Wood visited students of Andrews Elementary on March 2.
Wood selected the timeless Dr. Seuss classic Green Eggs and Ham to read aloud to students. The event served as an opportunity for the county’s top law enforcement officer to build positive relationships with the community’s youth.
“It was a wonderful experience being back at this school, and I am honored to be able to read this Dr. Seuss classic to them,” Wood said in a release. “This is a book I had read to me as a child, and it is one I have since read to my own children.”
