Drapery Outlet is a family owned business with a rich history of more than 50 years.
The business, owned by Joan and Gary Higdon, began humbly in the early 1970s. They started in their carport with just a couple boxes of clothing as Joan & Gary’s Discount.
As God blessed their little business, it grew. They moved to downtown Murphy, where Edward Jones is today. With the new space, they added bedding, curtains, kitchen and bath décor.
Outlets were a big trend back then, so they decided to change their name to Drapery Outlet. They were making homes beautiful.
After several successful years, two boys and a baby girl on the way, they decided to move back to Hiwassee Dam into a new building behind Lakeside Grocery. Customers followed, excited about the larger selection of merchandise, allowing them to operate in this location for around 15 years.
Next, they moved to U.S. 64 just east of U.S. 74/129 intersection. They added heritage lace and more table and wall décor as they continued to grow. After nine years, they decided it was time for a place of their own.
They built at 4295 U.S. 64 W. in Murphy, across from Chevrolet and Kia dealerships on the hill. They added a gift line, candles, essential oils, pictures, Blue Mountain cards, more quilts, décor and rugs.
After more than 50 years in business, from their carport to three other locations within a 22-mile radius, the Higdons are settled in their own location for the last 23 years. Since outlets are not the trend anymore, they decided to rebrand as Distinctly Original @ Drapery Outlet.
Serving their community was always a joy as they continued to make homes beautiful in the tri-state area. Come see them, as they truly appreciate their customers and friends.
