Murphy – Walmart was busy Saturday morning, as first-responders and volunteers took local children shopping as part of Cherokee County’s annual Shop with a Cop program.
Kids were paired with law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians, fire department personnel and community volunteers early Saturday after being treated to breakfast at Murphy Elementary School. Buses loaded with children ready to go shopping were then escorted to Walmart with the lights and sirens of police vehicles.
Upon pulling up to the entrance, children were excited to see snow falling. Some children got off the buses and ran into the arms of Santa as well as the Grinch.
Inside the store, kids and their shopping partners headed to several different departments including toys, books and clothing. Favored items were being put into the buggies by kids while adults added up the amounts striving not to exceed the $150 limit per child. There were 96 children participating in this year’s event.
“It’s amazing. It’s a great opportunity for the children to be seen and know that they’re cared about,” Walmart manager Lora Hill said.
“It’s a great opportunity for the police officers to step out of their normal roles and be a mentor as well as be part of an experience that will last a lifetime. They’re building connections with the children. I love it.”
Volunteers as well as monetary donations are key to helping the Shop with a Cop program remain successful.
