Crane had filed to run for mayor against incumbent Tim Radford in the municipal election set for Tuesday, Nov. 4. Radford said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of Crane’s death.
“While he and I were opponents in the upcoming mayoral election, I want to take this moment to recognize his willingness to step forward and serve our community. It takes courage and dedication to put one’s name on the ballot and offer to represent others,” said Radford, who is now running unopposed. “In every interaction I had with him, he was always positive and respectful. I will remember him for the kindness he showed and for his genuine desire to be involved in the life of our town.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find peace, comfort and strength in the days ahead, surrounded by the support of friends and community.”
Crane, a U.S. Army veteran who formerly worked with Fastop convenience store and WCNG-WCVP radio, also ran for mayor against Radford in 2021, but dropped out of the race after filing. In 2017, Crane ran for mayor for the first time, against eventual winner Rick Ramsey, dropping out after his name could not be removed from the ballot.
Crane’s Facebook page says he’s frm Old Saybrook, Conn., attended Leominster High School and studied at Kent State University. He also published letters to the editor in the Cherokee Scout.
“Jeff was unfailingly nice, and a great guy to talk with about anything,” Scout Publisher David Brown said. “His big smile and sense of humor will be missed.”
