Andrews – The boys basketball team kicked off their week with a 60-51 win at Murphy on Feb. 6.
Murphy’s Dominick Rummler kept the Bulldogs close in the first quarter, as he accounted for six of the Dogs’ nine points. Andrews had three players contributing to their scoring in the first stanza, as they popped for 12 to lead the Dogs 12-9 at the end of one period.
The Clark boys from Andrews went on a scoring frenzy in the second quarter to push the Cats’ lead to 12. Ty Clark hit two threes and added two field goals in the second quarter for 10 points, while Gabe Clark added two 3-pointers. Rummler kept the Dogs close in the first half, as he accounted for 15 of Murphy’s 20 points.
Andrews shut Rummler down in the second half, as he only added four more points to his total, but his teammates got in on the action. Murphy cut into Andrews’ lead in the third period, when they got as close as seven points, but Andrews came back and extended their lead back to eight points going into the fourth period.
Murphy cut the lead to five points with 4:22 left to play, and Ryan Payne hit a 3-pointer with under three minutes to play to get Murphy to a two-point deficit. Cam Rattler ended the Murphy run at the 1:25 mark when he hit a long 3-pointer to extend the Cats’ lead to 56-51. Andrews went on to outscore the Dogs 4-1 the rest of the game to net the final 60-51.
Rattler had a double-double on the night, as he accounted for almost half of Andrews’ points with 26 and added 12 rebounds. Ty Clark also popped for 16 points to round out the Cats in double figures for the night. Rummler just missed a double double for the Dogs, finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Wildcats defeated Hayesville 66-57 in a close game Friday.
Both teams scored 13 in the opening quarter, but Hayesville took a one-point lead to halftime. Andrews came out and had a strong second half by scoring 16 in the third quarter and 23 in the fourth quarter to get the win, despite Hayesville being close behind.
Rattler led the Wildcats with a 29-point performance on Friday; 15 of Rattler’s points came from free throws after going 15-17 from the line. Landon Green and Gabe Clark also had points totals in double digits, with Clark scoring 16 points and Green 12.
Four Hayesville players had double digits in points. Luke Lee led the team with 13 points, Slade Crouch followed close behind with 12, and both Asher Brown and Isaac Chandler had 10 points.
Andrews girls
The Andrews seniors had not beat the Lady Bulldogs in their high school careers going into this season. The Lady Wildcats seniors eked out their first win over the Lady Dogs back on Jan. 5, when they won an overtime thriller in Andrews 44-36.
They came into the Dawghouse looking for their second win on Feb. 6. It became clear early in the game that they would succeed in their venture.
Murphy took the lead with six minutes to go in the first quarter when Cayla Greer hit a 3-pointer to put Murphy up 3-2. It was the only time in the game the Lady Bulldogs would hold the lead.
On the next trip down the court, Alexis Beasley hit her shot and the Lady Cats went back up to stay. Andrews went on to outscore Murphy 17-6 in the first period and never looked back.
Andrews piled on seven more points to their lead in the second period, as Kylie Donaldson scored 15 of her 25 points in the first half. Andrews took a 33-16 lead into the half.
Andrews outscored the Lady Bulldogs in every quarter except the fourth, and Andrews went on to register the win 57-39. Murphy’s shooting woes continued as they only shot 28 percent from the field. Andrews
won the battle at the boards and caused 10 turnovers
and converted those turnovers for 12 points in the game.
Cayla Greer led all Murphy scorers with 17 points, Emma Laney had seven and Saige Kent added five. Donaldson of Andrews led all scorers with 25 points.
The Lady Wildcats also took on Hayesville on Friday, but the outcome was different for them. Hayesville defeated Andrews 61-22.
Despite a strong performance earlier in the week, the Lady Wildcats could not come up with a win. Andrews did not score more than 10 points in any of the four quarters, but Hayesville scored 12 or more points in each quarter.
With the regular season behind both teams, they will look ahead to the Big Smoky Conference tournament next week.
