Shooting teams open

The Andrews middle and high school shooting teams competed at the District 9 regional competition in Polk County, Tenn., on March 16.

High-schoolers Carley Cark, Braden Gaither and Kaleb Smith all shot perfect scores in shotgun. Boone Parker tied for first in rifle and finished in seventh place overall. Autumn Fowler scored well on her Hunters Skills exam.

The middle school team placed third overall as a team. They placed second in Hunters Skills, third in archery and fourth in rifle. Conner Sentz shot perfect in shotgun and finished in fourth place overall. The middle school also received the sportsmanship award.

MURPHY

Firecrackers tryouts set

From 3-6 p.m. Saturday at Konehete Veterans Park, the Firecrackers NC ages 14 and under softball team will hold open practice. From 2-6 p.m. Saturday, April 6, they will hold tryouts.

Firecrackers NC is a 14u travel softball team based out of Murphy. Their season runs from April to December. Anyone interested in learning more about the team or Firecracker Softball organization is invited to join open practice Saturday.

HAYESVILLE

Men’s golf teeing off

The Chatuge Shores Men’s Golf Association will kickoff their summer season Monday, April 1. The season runs until Oct. 31.

They play every Monday and Wednesday morning and meet at Chatuge Shores Golf Course in Hayesville by 8:30 a.m., weather permitting. Any level of golfer is welcome to join for fun and friendship with a handicapped golf competition.

Establishing a handicap is required and they can assist anyone with that process. Anyone from the surrounding area is welcome to join. Membership dues are $30 a year, which includes a luncheon at the end of the season.

MURPHY

Murphy golf Wins match

The Murphy golf team won a tournament held at Old Union Golf Course in Blairsville, Ga. The Bulldogs shot a team score of 174 to win.

Brady Golden shot a three over par 39 to lead the team. Connor Golden shot 44, Andrew Barolet shot 45 and Will Joyner shot 46. Murphy had the top four individual scores at the tournament.

PEACHTREE

Swain tops TCEC soccer

On Thursday, the Tri-County Early College women’s soccer team traveled to Swain County to take on the Maroon Devils. They lost 9-0 against the first-place team in the Smoky Mountain Conference.

Tri-County had a 2-2 overall record and are 2-2 in conference play. This Thursday, they will head to Cherokee to take on the Lady Braves at 4 p.m.

ATLANTA

Opening day finally here

On Thursday, all 30 Major League Baseball teams will be in action on opening day to kick off the regular season.

The Atlanta Braves will head to Philadelphia to take on the division rival Phillies, with the first pitch set for 3:05 p.m.

The Braves’ first homestead will be from April 5-11, when they will host the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets at Truist Park.

The Braves will then travel to Miami to take on the division rival Marlins from April 12-14.
