Doing well at regionals

Murphy and Tri-County Early College had swimmers compete in the Western Regional championship Feb. 2-3.

Overall, the Tri-County women’s swim team finished 19th with 40.5 points. They competed in relay and individual events.

In the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay, Iris Diaz-Menchu, MaryLynn Hulsey, Tori Jimenez and Ernestrina Trigueros finished in 22nd place. In the women’s 200-yard medley relay, MaryLynn Hulsey, Jaden Crocker, Ariana Rivas and Fern Crayton finished in 13th place. In the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, Ernestrina Trigueros, Tori Jimenez, Jaden Crocker and Iris Diaz-Menchu finished in 24th place.

On the men’s side for Tri-County, Nathan Abejam, Logan DiCcio, Griffin Croteau-Schreiner and |William Boyd finished 23rd in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay. In the 200-yard medley relay, Nathan Abejam, Landen Spies, Griffin Croteau-Schreiner and William Boyd finished in 20th place.

For individual events, Fern Crayton finished eighth in both the women’s 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. Ariana Rivas finished 10th in the 100-yard freestyle and 13th in the 100-yard backstroke. Tori Jimenez finished 21st in the 100-yard butterfly.

With their performances at the regional championship, both Crayton and Rivas earned a spot at the state championship.

Murphy had one athlete compete at the regional championship. Ansley Roper finished 31st in the women’s 200-yard individual medley.

BASKETBALL

Little Smoky tourney recap

Hiwassee Dam emerged victorious in all three Little Smoky Mountain Conference championship games Thursday, as varsity boys, varsity girls and junior varsity boys all secured wins against Highlands.

The first night of the tournament, which was two days long, saw four games. Nantahala girls took on the Lady Eagles in the first game, and the Lady Eagles won 68-20 to send them to Thursday’s championship game.

The second game on Feb. 20 was Nantahala boys taking on Highlands, which secured a 51-36 victory. The third game was the final girls game of the first round, and Highlands defeated the host school Blue Ridge 64-22.

In the final game of the night, Hiwassee Dam boys defeated Blue Ridge 86-41. With Hiwassee Dam boys advancing to the championship, all three games that were played Thursday were Hiwassee Dam vs. Highlands.

Hiwassee Dam JV boys kicked off Thursday’s three-game championship slate with a win to become Little Smoky Mountain Conference champions. The remaining games followed suit, as the Eagles secured the sweep to earn three conference championships. 

WRESTLING

ACWF looks for mayhem

The American Championship Wrestling Federation will hold its third event of the year, “March Mayhem,” on Saturday night at the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Memory Lane.

The event will feature Mr. Atlanta 2 taking on last month’s mystery man, who we now know is Chris Cross. Hypnahtik will be handcuffed to The Freak for a match.

There will also be two tournaments, with one
for the U.S. title and the other for the Lightweight title. Men of Honor –
Stryker, Frodo and Mountain Man Jeremy Stiles – and The American Outlaws – which is Axel Gunn and Killshot – will also be in action.

Details: Doors open at 6 p.m.; bell time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 years old and ages 5 and younger are free.
