Murphy star Senior Running Back Hunter Stalcup was selected to play in the 2023 N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star football game on Dec. 17, while Andrews head coach James Phillips was named an assistant coach in the annual event.

.

Stalcup, the only person selected west of Asheville, is one of 72 elite players from across the state and all four high school classifications. He rushed for 2,036 yards and 29 touchdowns this year, scoring six more through the air, while finishing his career as a Bulldog with 6,449 all-purpose yards and 80 touchdowns.

Phillips coached one of the most successful seasons in the Andrews history in the 2022 season, finishing 13-1. The rebuilding Wildcats finished 4-7 this season.

.

In the game, Laney’s Tyjhere Crudup and Triton’s Javon Cowan ran for two touchdowns each to lead the East to a 35-7 victory over the West. It was the first time the East-West game was played in December.

The West leads the series 41-32-2 after the East won its second straight game. The margin of victory was the largest in the game’s history since the West won 40-0 in 2005. Cowan was named the game’s most valuable offensive player, while Landon Sargent of Cape Fear was the defensive MVP.
