COLLEGE

State sues NCAA

N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit challenging the National Collegiate Athletics Association’s transfer eligibility rule, a release says.

Stein alleges that the rule illegally restrains college athletes’ ability to change schools and play sports. The rule requires college athletes who transfer among Division I schools to wait one year before competing unless the NCAA makes an exception and waives the rule.

Stein wrote letters to the NCAA criticizing the transfer rule after it was used to temporarily prevent University of North Carolina football player Devontez Walker and Wake Forest University basketball player Efton Reid from playing this year.

Firearm injuries up

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Law Enforcement Division is experiencing an increase in firearm-related hunting incidents this year involving serious injury and fatalities. NCWRC reminds hunters to practice firearm safety when hunting or using firearms.

Wildlife Law Enforcement reports there have been five fatalities involving hunting with a firearm this hunting season, more than the past three seasons combined, which had one fatality from 2020-22. Fourteen hunting-related incidents have occurred thus far in 2023, with 11 of them involving a firearm.

North Carolina ranks seventh in the nation for licensed hunters at 603,995, according to the International Hunter Education Association. Many firearm injuries occur when hunters fail to properly identify their target and mistake another hunter for game, or carelessly handle a firearm resulting in self-inflicted injuries.

Hunters fight CWD

A reminder to deer hunters: obtain your sample results for Chronic Wasting Disease by visiting Go Outdoors NC and logging into your personal account. Results are on the Harvest Reports page in the CWD Testing column.

All hunters who submit a CWD sample will receive an email to the address listed on their Go Outdoors account when results are available, generally 2-4 weeks from the time of sample drop off.

CWD is highly transmissible to other deer. It spreads through infected saliva, urine and feces of live deer and the movement of deer carcasses and carcass parts. During early stages of infection, deer may appear healthy
