  • The Andrews wrestling team held a benefit fishing tournament on Nov. 11. First place went to Ethan Sutton and Robbie Barter, second place to Benny and Bronson Kirby, and third place to Mitch Kirby and Tony Lands. The biggest fish was caught by Bronson. The tournament, which raised $851 for the wrestling team, was organized by Michael Carter, with plaques and prizes provided by Greg Boehm and Team Industries in Marble. Rex Cable is the team’s coach.

    The Dog Dash set

    The Murphy basketball and track teams are presenting The Dog Dash 5K run/walk fundraiser on Thanksgiving Day.

    Registration costs $25 at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Murphy track. Runners take off at 8 a.m.

    Wrestling with pros

    The ACWF presents a “Violent Night” (and likely not so silent) of professional wrestling at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, in the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Memory Lane.

    Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for ages 6-12, with ages 5 and under free. Doors open at 6 p.m.

    Competing that night will be Men of Honor (Frodo, Mountain Man Jeremy Stiles and Strykee), The American Outlaws (Axel Freakin Gun & Kill Shot) and The End (Hypnahtik and Adrain Hernandez). Everyone is invited to the family friendly event.

    The Young Harris College men’s basketball team lost a close one in their home opener, 72-82, to the Mars Hill Lions on Nov. 15. Cole Deptula nailed two free throws to send the game into overtime, but the Lions’ offense prevailed.

    The Mountain Lions move to 0-3 overall and 0-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Lions move to 1-3 overall and are 0-0 in the SAC.

    In women’s basketball, Emily Trushel scored 27 points as the University of North Georgia recorded an 88-53 women’s basketball win over Young Harris on Nov. 11 on day two of the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas challenge at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center. The Mountain Lions fell to 1-1, while the Nighthawks improved to 1-1.

    Free hunting webinars set

    The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering six free hunting webinars through the end of the year. The next free webinar will be on Upland Game Hunting on Friday, Dec. 8.

    Classes will be held remotely from 7-8 p.m. and conclude with a 30-minute question-and answer-session. A recording of the presentation will be made available the week following the webinar on the commission’s YouTube channel. There have been four previous webinars on deer hunting, deer processing, squirrel hunting and DU-Waterfowl hunting.
