HAYESVILLE
School record for Russell
Hiwassee Dam junior Ethan’s Russell’s junior cross country season got off to a fast start, as he broke the school record by nearly 25 seconds in an Aug. 23 competition at Hayesville. Russell’s 5,000 meter time of 16 minutes, 51.40 seconds was well under the old mark
of 17:16.19 set by CJ Anderson at the 2016 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A state championship. Russell just missed the mark as a sophomore, running a 17:16.70 in the 5K race at the 1A West Regional Championship last October.
Russell finished second in the race to Andrews sophomore O’Malley Salinas, who ran a new personal best time of 16:26.90. That beats previous best of 16:29.90 at the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championship at Huntsville, Alabama on Dec. 3. Murphy also competed in the meet, with freshman CJ Yarbro leading the way with an 11th place finish in the boys race (21:05.40) as the Bulldogs finished in third in the team competition. Junior Corinne Cotton was the highest finisher for the Lady Bulldogs placing sixth (24:02.80).
