RALEIGH

Restocking striped bass

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is partnering with the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries on a three-year stocking effort to help restore the striped bass populations in the Roanoke River and Albemarle Sound. The population had been depleted in recent years due to overfishing and declines in natural spawning on the Roanoke River.

In May, 1.5 million fry (2-to-4 days old) were released into the Roanoke River in Jamesville, while 650,000 fingerlings (2 inches in length) were released in late June into Albemarle Sound near Edenton. The fish were supplied by the wildlife commission’s Watha State Fish Hatchery in Pender County. The N.C. Marine & Estuary Foundation, a nonprofit agency that supports the state’s coast through funding research and educational projects, has provided $10,000 to help support the effort.
