RALEIGH

New catfish state record

The N.C. Wildlife Commission has confirmed that Justin Hall of Reidsville set a new record for largest channel catfish caught on May 23.

Hall’s catfish was 27 pounds, 7 inches, breaking the previous record of a 26-pound catfish from the Neuse River in July 2021. Hall caught the record-breaking catfish, which was 36¼ inches long and nearly 25 inches in girth, from a local farm pond near his home in Rockingham County. Hall had been fishing the pond for years, but rarely caught channel catfish from it until his son caught what he estimated to be a 25-pound catfish in May.

To qualify for a N.C. Freshwater Fish State Record, an angler has to catch the fish by rod and reel or cane pole. Then it must be weighed on a scale certified by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and witnessed by an observer. The final step is for the fish to be identified by a fisheries biologist from the commission along with an application and a full side-view photo.
