Watch out for coyotes
Biologists at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission say this is the month people are more likely to spot a coyote than any other time this year.
Coyotes are skilled at avoiding people, but often roam large areas to find enough food to feed their young pups. Attacks on humans are rare, but coyotes can sometimes mistakes pets like cats and small dogs for their natural prey.
For that reason, the commission recommends keeping a close eye on pets when outside, including a keeping them on a leash or behind a fence that’s at least 6 feet tall. If a coyote has young pups in a den nearby, it may stands it ground.
If that happens, the commission recommends calmly leaving the area and notifying others if on a public trail. Once the pups can survive outside the den, the coyote will abandon the area.
