Russell tops on the track

Hiwassee Dam’s Ethan Russell was one of the top track and field performers among local athletes last week. Competing in the Bulldog Invitational at Murphy on April 19 along with Hayesville, Swain County, Rosman and Tri-County Early College, Russell took first in the boys 800-meter (2 minutes, 15.66 seconds), 1,600-meter (5:05.49) and 3,200-meter runs (11:30.67).

Murphy had four athletes win events at its home meet. Jordan Oliver won the girls 100-meter wheelchair dash (46.48), wheelchair shot put (8 feet, 0.75 inches) and wheelchair discus (17’9); Camden Breazeale won the boys 110-meter (18.48) and 300-meter hurdles (47.89); Ryan Payne won the boys 400-meter dash (54.89); and Cale Harger won the long jump (18’7). The Bulldogs also won the boys 4x200-meter (1:36.10) and 4x400-meter relay (3:47.97).

Tri-County’s Fern Crayton won two events as well, taking first in both the girls 1,600-meter (5:52.46) and 3,200-meter runs (13:06.42). Three other Jaguar athletes broke school records. Sebastian Clevez broke his own record in the boys 200-meter dash (24.60), Jaden Crocker reset her record in the girls discus throw (86’9) and Logan DiCicco set a new mark in the boys long jump (16’7).

Andrews competed at the Robbinsville meet along with the Black Knights, Cherokee and Nantahala. Samuel Preston took first in the boys triple jump (38’1.5), while Kaiya Ellis won the girls 100-meter hurdles (18.61) and Alexis Beasley won the girls shot put (30’11.75). The Wildcats also won the boys 4x100-meter relay (46.61) and the girls 4x200-meter relay (2:02.02).

Fishing day set Saturday

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its annual Kid’s Fishing Day at the sheriff’s office firing range Saturday.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with poles hitting the water at 9 a.m. For details, call Stephanie Swanson at 828-837-2589.
