Rotary golf tourney set
The Rotary Club of Murphy’s Tournament of Champions will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Chatuge Shores Golf Club.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the first tee at 9 a.m. The first-place team will receive $650, second place will receive $400 and third place will receive $250.

Nelson girls hoops coach
Former Murphy, High School alum and coach Thomas Nelson has been named the new coach of the Union County girls basketball team.
Nelson served as an assistant coach for the Murphy football team from 2007-21 and was also the head softball coach for five seasons. He left Murphy after the 2020-21 school year to take a job at Union County, where he served as an assistant athletic director for the 2021-22 school year and defensive coordinator for the Panthers’ football team the past two years.
Union County girls basketball went 14-14 last season, including two wins over Murphy.
BESSEMER CITY
Locals play All-Star game
Six local seniors took part in the annual West/Midwest All-Star game on March 18 at Bessemer City High School.
In the girls game, the West defeated the Midwest 93-76, with Hiwassee Dam senior Kiera Taylor recording 16 points, two assists, two rebounds and was recognized as one of the games top performers.
In the boys game, the Midwest came out on top 110-73, with Murphy’s Dillian Brown and Hiwassee Dam’s Preston Hyde leading the team with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Andrews Donovan Bateman (4 points, 4 rebounds), and Hiwassee Dam’s Tanner Taylor (3 points, 4 rebounds) and Tate Raper (2 points), also participated in the game.

Register for Senior Games
Registration for the Cherokee/Clay Senior Games continues at $15, and it’s recommended to register before Friday to receive a T-shirt.
The games will take place at the Clay County Recreation Center at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, and end with the closing ceremonies at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 20, in the Enlo Building at Tri-County Community College in Peachtree. Register online at cherokeecountyseniorgames.org or pick up a form at any Cherokee or Clay County senior center.

Fish tourney set in April
The WNC Shine Club and Tri-County Bass Club will host its second annual fishing tournament at the Ledford’s Chapel Boat Ramp on Lake Chatuge from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22.
Each boat will be allowed to catch five fish, and the boat that catches the highest total weight of the fish will win $1,000. The top 10 highest weight totals will each get a cash prize of at least $100.
Registration is $100 per boat/team. All proceeds will go to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

The Lady Bass Angler’s Association Tour is coming to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds for a tournament May 1-5.
Any pro anglers or boaters are welcome and can register at the tour association’s website. Everyone is welcome to watch the weigh-in May 4-5.
