New wildlife regulations

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission voted at its business meeting on Feb. 23 to adopt eight proposed rules related to wildlife management that will be considered at an upcoming meeting.

The proposals were presented at three public hearings across the state in January, as well as a virtual hearing. Public comment was received as well. The proposal will likely go into effect June 1. To view the adopted rules, visit ncwildflife.org.

Highlights include changing the dates and areas of restricted access on portions of Wildlife Conservation Areas that are posted as Waterbird Nesting Areas from April 1 through Aug. 31 to March 1 through Sept. 15 and prohibit open fires.

Trout waters open April 1

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will open about 1,000 miles of Hatchery Supported Trout Waters in April, with the season running through Feb. 29, 2024.

Trout-supported waters, are marked by green and white signs, have been closed since Feb. 28. While the waters will be open for public fishing, many of the miles are privately owned.

Bat season back in state

The N.C. Wildlife Commission official says it best to get rid of bats if you suspect they’re living in your home before pup-rearing season begins on May 1.

After hibernating or migrating south for the winter, bats are starting to return. Guano is the most obvious sign a bat is living inside or outside of your home.

If they’re getting inside, a licensed Wildlife Control Agent can evict them for you, and you can find a list of licensed professionals at ncwildlife.org. If you can’t evict them, the commission recommends leaving them to roost until the end of July.
