Team shoots and scores
The Andrews shooting team competed in its first competition of the season on Feb. 18 in Canton.
The event featured more than 270 kids, and the Andrews Middle School team took first place in team archery, while Connor Sentz took first in individual archery. In the high school division, senior Braydon Rowland took first in individual archery and second overall.
The team will be hosting the Far West Tournament on Saturday at the Sheriff’s Farm in Marble.

Deer forum set at TCCC
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will host one its two forums in western North Carolina regarding the deer hunting season and a shift in the potential structure Tuesday, March 14, in the Crisp Building at Tri-County Community College.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the forum taking place from 7-9 p.m. Those who attend will be able to provide input and discuss topics with the commission.

Disease in some deer
Officials from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission have tested a hunter-harvested deer positive for chronic waste disease in Cumberland County.
This is the first time deer in the state has tested positive outside of the surveillance area set up after a Yadkin County deer harvested in December 2021 tested positive for the disease. That surveillance areas included Alleghany, Davie, Forsyth, Iredell, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.

ASHEVILLE
Friends of the Smokies
Registration for the 13th annual Classic Hikes of the Smokies is open.
The fundraiser and hiking series will lead expeditions on the second Tuesday of each month from March through December and is done through Friends of the Smokies, an official nonprofit partner of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hikes will be led by a member of the organization’s Hike Advisory Team.
The first hike will take place Tuesday, March 14, on the 5.2-mile Jakes Creek Trail. Space is limited, and preregistration is required.
The cost is $35 per hike or $20 for members of Friends of the Smokies. Register online at Hike.FriendsOfTheSmokies.org.
