Rivas swims to state meet
Tri-County Early College sophomore Ariana Rivas will compete Thursday at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
Rivas qualified to compete in the 100-yard butterfly after finishing eighth in the event at the 1A/2A West Regional Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Saturday.
The top six swimmers in each of the three regions in each event qualify, along with the next six-fastest swimmers. After taking the top six from each region, Rivas’ time of 1 minute, 7.52 seconds was the fourth fastest of those remaining. Her time was a new school record and the second-fastest time in the event in Cherokee County history.
