Lloyd joins state meet
Murphy sophomore Gabby Lloyd punched her ticket to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A Indoor Track State Championships on Jan. 24.
Lloyd took first in the shot put, with her throw of 31 feet, 4 inches, clearing the qualifying standard of 30 feet. Lloyd is the second Murphy athlete to qualify for the state meet, joining junior Jordan Oliver.
This is also Lloyd’s first time qualifying for a state championship meet.
CHARLOTTE
Swimmers to regionals
Tri-County Early College will send two swimmers in individual events as well as five relay swimmers to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A West Regional Championships on Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
For the Lady Jaguars, Fern Crayton will compete in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, while Ariana Rivas will be in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Crayton and Rivas will also compete in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Jaden Crocker, Iris Diaz-Menchu, Tori Higdon, MaryLynn Hulsey, Josie Mosqueda and Tina Trigueros will compete in the meet as relay-only swimmers.
For the Jaguars, the quarter of Nathan Abejam, William Boyd, Nathan Downs and Landon Spies will compete in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.
RALEIGH
Turkey hunt webinars set
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will offer three free turkey hunting webinars in February, ahead of the start of the wild turkey open season in April.
The webinars are more geared toward novice hunters, but any level of hunter can sign up. Topics will include biology, species habits, habitats, scouting, essential equipment, setup, effective shot placement, decoy placement and hunting strategies.
The seminars will take place Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 7-9, via Zoom. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required.

CHEROKEE COUNTY
Sign up for local soccer
Registration for the Cherokee County Soccer League is open until Feb. 29 for ages 4-14, as long as the players turn 4 by April 1 and remain under 15 through May 27.
Practices will be offered in Andrews and Murphy for each age group, though a practice location for Murphy 14U hasn’t been found yet. Practices will start March 13, the first game will start April 1 and the last game will be played May 27.
Home games will take place at Heritage Park in Andrews between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. For details, see the league’s page on Facebook.
HAYESVILLE
Fish tourney set for April
The WNC Shine Club and Tri-County Bass Club will host its second annual fishing tournament at the Ledford’s Chapel Boat Ramp on Lake Chatuge from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22.
Each boat will be allowed to catch five fish, and the boat that catches the highest total weight of the fish will win $1,000. The top 10 highest weight totals will each get a cash prize of at least $100.
Registration is $100 per boat/team, and all proceeds will go to the Shriners Hospital for Children. For details, contact tournament directors Perry Graves at 557-0885 or Jeff Southards at 736-2868.

Rotary golf tourney set
The Rotary Club of Murphy’s Tournament of Champions will take place Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chatuge Shores Golf Club.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the first tee at 9 a.m. The first-place team will receive $650, second place will receive $400 and third place will receive $250.
