Good show in the pool

Murphy High School and Tri-County Early College swimmers came away with 23 best times at the “Shiver Me Timbers” Swim Meet at Tallulah Falls on Jan. 7. Several swimmers also had top-10 finishes.

For Murphy, Kirra Talent finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Kaydence Walton finished ninth in the 100-yard freestyle. Talent, Walton and Olivia Raxter and Faith Ward teamed up to finish eighth in the 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.

For Tri-County, Fern Crayton and Ariana Rivas had a pair of second- and third-place finishes for the Lady Jaguars. Crayton finished second in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while Rivas finished second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly.

Tori Higdon finished 10th in the 200 freestyle, while Jaden Crocker finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke. For the Jaguars, Nathan Abejam finished sixth in the 200 individual medley, and Landon Spies finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke.

The Lady Jaguars had several top-10 relays, too, with Crayton, Crocker, Higdon and Rivas teaming up to finish second in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Crayton, Rivas, Hulsey and Tina Trigueros finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay, while Crocker, Higdon, Iris Diaz-Menchu and MaryLynn Hulsey team up to finish ninth in the 200 medley relay.

For the Jaguars, the relay team of Abejam, Spies, William Boyd and Nathan Downs finished eighth in the 200 medley relay, then 10th in the 200 freestyle relay.

RALEIGH

Turkey hunt webinars set

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will offer three free turkey hunting webinars in February, ahead of the start of the wild turkey open season in April.

The webinars are more geared toward novice hunters, but any level of hunter can sign up. Topics will include biology, species habits, habitats, scouting, essential equipment, setup, effective shot placement, decoy placement and hunting strategies.

The seminars will take place Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 7-9, via Zoom. Space is limited, so pre-registration online is required. Each class will be one hour long and end with an interactive Q&A session.

Participants will receive a Zoom link after registering via a confirmation email, and classes will be emailed to registered participants on March 1. For details, visit ncwild.org/sbs, or contact the commission at walter.james@ncwildlife.org or 984-202-1387.

CHEROKEE COUNTY

Sign up for local soccer

Registration for the Cherokee County Soccer League is open until Feb. 29 for ages 4-14, as long as the players turn 4 by April 1 and remain under 15 through May 27.

Practices will be offered in Andrews and Murphy for each age group, though a practice location for Murphy 14U hasn’t been found yet. Practices will start March 13, the first game will start April 1 and the last game will be played May 27.

Home games will take place at Heritage Park in Andrews between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. For details, see the league’s page on Facebook.

HAYESVILLE

Rotary golf tourney set

The Rotary Club of Murphy’s Tournament of Champions will take place Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chatuge Shores Golf Club.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the first tee at 9 a.m. The first-place team will receive $650, second place will receive $400 and third place will receive $250.
