Cats have 5 SMC honors

Five athletes from Andrews were named Smoky Mountain Conference athletes of the year. Three of them were in the fall sports season, one in the winter and one more was added from the spring season.

O’Malley Salinas was named cross-country athlete of the year, while Tyler West was named co-lineman of the year for the conference in the fall. Joshua Hernandez was named boys soccer player of the year. For the winter, Cameron Rattler was named boys varsity basketball player of the year for the conference.

For the 2024 spring season, officials added one more local athlete of the year to earn five honors for Andrews. Samuel Preston was named track athlete of the year for the Smoky Mountain Conference.

Lady Dogs earn honors

Over the weekend, multiple Murphy Lady Bulldogs soccer players were announced for All-Smoky Mountain Conference and All-Region honors.

Headlining the honors is senior Lailee Holloway, as she became a two-time All-State soccer player. Out of the seven girls selected, Holloway was the only player from a public school.

Holloway was also selected as Conference Player of the Year. The Lady Bulldogs’ All-Conference and All-Region selections are Holloway, Isabel Parker, Emma Ledford and Tyra Nelson. All-Conference honorable mentions went to Kaydence Walton and freshman Haile Hill.

Murphy athletic director Joseph Watson was also voted 1A West Athletic Director of the Year. He will advance in voting in hopes of becoming Athletic Director of the Year for the state.

Dogs’ youth camps soon

This summer, Murphy High School athletics will offer multiple youth summer camps for multiple sports.

From 9-11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, June 3-6, Murphy football will host a camp for ages 7 to rising ninth-graders. Cost is $75 per person and can be paid in advance or on the day of the camp.

From 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday, June 3-4, is the Torin Rogers Lady Bulldogs youth basketball camp for first- through eighth-graders. Cost is $40 per person. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. the first day of camp.

From 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11-12, is the Murphy youth volleyball camp for rising fourth- through eighth-graders. The camp is $60 per person and can be paid in advance or on the first day of camp.

From 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, June 17-19, is the Murphy soccer camp at Lowe’s field. The camp is for youths ages 5-14 and costs $60 per person, to paid on the first day of camp.

All participants will receive a free Murphy soccer t-shirt. Those interested can sign up online with the fee being paid on the first day of camp.
