MURPHY
Success in soccer
The Murphy Middle School soccer team wrapped up its first winning season with an 8-3 record. The team had six shutouts and scored 44 goals during the season, ending the season with a plus-28 goal differential.
Ella Ledford led the team in scoring with 20 goals and five assists. Deserae Zenobi led the team with in assists with 14 as well as scoring 12 goals. Right wing forward Addison Peterson scored six goals and had seven assists.
On their backline, Kylee Koop had 87 steals, 17 blocks, 22 clears and a goal, which is impressive because defenders rarely score. Kenzly Yarbro had 93 steals, four assists and also had a goal. Lanie Hinton had 41 steals, 12 blocks and 25 clears.
During the season, the Lady Bulldogs went on a seven-game winning streak with wins over Rabun Gap, Ga.; Towns County, Ga.; and Highlands.
Head coach Andrew Zenobi implemented two things in order to help improve the team: sprints and pizza. He had the team run sprints after practice to teach them to leave it all on the field. He also implemented pizza, but only for defenders when they got a shutout.
“Defense is a thankless job, and most defenders will never know the feeling of scoring a goal in front of a crowd,” Zenobi said. “There is nothing that comes close to that feeling, but if there was something, it would be pizza.”
