RALEIGH

13 diseased deer in N.C.

A total of 13 new cases of chronic wasting disease have been confirmed from deer samples submitted since July 1, 2023, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reported. This brings the total number of CWD-positive results to 24 since it was first detected in a deer harvested in Yadkin County in 2021.

They collected 36,146 samples last fall from wild cervids and have received 98 percent of the results. The 13 positive results came from counties where CWD-positive deer had been previously detected in the past. Those counties include Cumberland, Surry, Stokes and Yadkin.

Chronic wasting disease is caused by abnormal proteins that slowly spread through a deer’s nervous system, which cause spongy holes in the brain that results in death. There is no vaccine, treatment or cure.
