Andrews – The Lady Wildcats started the week off right, as they defeated Summit Charter 48-26, but the week didn’t end well as the Andrews girls basketball team fell to Cherokee 78-26 and then lost to Robbinsville 55-41.
Kylie Donaldson and Kinleigh Queen led the attack of the Lady Wildcats (8-10) in the first period against Summit Charter (4-6) on Jan. 29. Donaldson hit for seven points, and Queen added six, to put the Cats ahead of the Lady Bears 13-7.
Andrews’ dominance continued in the second quarter, as Donaldson led the scoring with five for the Cats and 12 second-quarter points. The Cats led at the half 25-8.
Donaldson added 12 more points to her total in the second half and ended the night with 24 points, as Andrews outscored the Lady Bears in every quarter. Queen added six more second-half points to finish the night with 14. The Lady Cats added five more points to their first-half lead, as coach Tim Wood got several younger players time on the court in the second half.
Things didn’t fare well for their second game of the week on Jan. 30, as Cherokee jumped out to a 26-14 first-quarter lead and poured on the points after that for a 78-26 win over the Lady Wildcats. Donaldson and Queen accounted for most of the Andrews’ first-half points but Cherokee’s stifling defense made it difficult for the Cats to get on the board.
Cherokee (17-1) held the Lady Cats to only six points in the second quarter, six in the third and shut the Lady Cats out in the fourth quarter. Donaldson had 11 points to lead Andrews’ scorers.
Queen was held to only seven points, all coming in the first half. The Lady Braves were led by Whitney Rogers with 17 points.
The Lady Cats defeated Robbinsville in December at Robbinsville and were looking for another win over the Lady Black Knights on Friday night, but it was not going to happen. The Lady Black Knights jumped out to a 18-6 lead and never looked back.
The Lady Knights held Kylie Donaldson to only seven points in the first half, and Queen was held to only four, while Robbinsville used a balance scoring attack as seven different players contributing to their scoring to build a 30-15 halftime lead.
Andrews made a run in the third quarter, when they closed the lead to within eight points behind two 3-pointers by Donaldson and another one by Demi Davis. Robbinsville (12-5) fought back in the later part of the period and not only made up the points they had given up, but extended its lead to 46-30.
Andrews made another run in the fourth quarter, but it came up short. Donaldson led Andrews with 14 points and Queen had 10, while Demi Davis went 2-3 from beyond the arc and ended the night with eight points.
The Lady Cats will hit the road to wrap up their regular season. On Friday, they travel to Hayesville, and Tuesday they head to Swain County to end the regular season.
