Lady Eagles pick up 2 wins during busy week

Hiwassee Dam – The Lady Eagles have played six games in the past two weeks and found success as the regular season wraps up.

In their first of three games last week, Hiwassee Dam won a close game against Highlands 48-46 on Feb. 6.

The Lady Eagles took a 14-12 lead after the first quarter, which interestingly was the only quarter where the teams did not score the same number of points. In the second quarter, they both scored 11 points, with Hiwassee Dam leading 25-23 at halftime.

Both teams then scored 14 in the third quarter and nine points in the fourth quarter, with the Lady Eagles hanging on to get the win. Leading the way in points for Hiwassee Dam was Olivia McNabb with 20 and Brinkley Payne with 11. For the Highlanders, Jordyn Borino had 14 points.

On Thursday, the Lady Eagles fell to Cherokee 98-32. This loss ends a seven-game win streak for Hiwassee Dam.

The Braves got out to an early lead by scoring 39 points in the first quarter and 31 more in the second quarter to take a 70-21 lead at halftime. Cherokee continued building on their lead and scored 20 points in the third quarter. Hiwassee Dam held Cherokee to eight points in the final quarter, but it was too late as the Braves cruised to the win.

For the Lady Eagles, Olivia McNabb had 18 points against Cherokee and went 5-5 on free throws. Katie McNabb had 10 points with six of her points coming from free throws.

On the Cherokee side, four players had double-digit points. Daisee Fourkiller-raby led the way with 18 points. Joscelyn Stamper had 16 points, Cecily Swimmer had 15 points and Whitney Rogers had 14 points.

On Friday, Hiwassee Dam capped off their three-game week with a 73-32 win against Nantahala to remain undefeated in the Little Smoky Conference. The Lady Eagles kicked off the game with a strong first quarter by scoring 22 points and holding Nantahala to only four points.

The Lady Eagles led 37-17 at halftime. They continued their momentum into the second half, when Hiwassee Dam scored 20 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth. In the fourth quarter, the defense again held Nantahala to four points.

Four Hiwassee Dam players were in double-digit points against the Lady Hawks. Brooklyn Hyde led the Lady Eagles on Friday with 19 points after going 8-10 on 2-point field goals. Olivia McNabb had 17 points, Katie McNabb had 13 and Brinkley Payne had 12.

For Nantahala, two players had double-digit points. Summer McMahan had 11 points, while Delaney McLead had 10.

Hiwassee Dam will be the top seed in the Little Smoky Conference, with the conference tournament kicking off next week.
