Hiwassee Dam – The Lady Eagles’ softball team wrapped up their regular season last week with two games against Swain County. They were held scoreless in both games as the regular season concluded.
In the first game in the series against the Lady Maroon Devils (10-6) on May 1, they lost 11-0. The Lady Eagles (7-9) were held to only two hits in the game that lasted five innings. Both of their hits came from Olivia McNabb. McNabb and Olivia Williams shared duties on the mound, with McNabb pitching 2.2 innings and Williams pitching 1.1.
After the first inning, the game was scoreless for both teams, Swain got their bats going in the bottom of the second and didn’t slow down. They scored four runs in the second inning and five in the third to lead 9-0 through three innings.
Swain tacked on two more in the fourth to lead 11-0. After Hiwassee Dam was unable to scored in the top of the fifth, the Lady Devils won.
The following day, the Lady Eagles hosted Swain and were held scoreless again in a 5-0 loss. The game was deadlocked at zero through the first five innings until the Lady Devils broke the tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Swain added two more in the top of the seventh to lead 5-0. They secured the win after the Lady Eagles could not get their bats going.
Hiwassee Dam had three hits from Avery McNabb, Kalli Haglin and Sky Taylor. Taylor also had a stolen base. Olivia Williams threw an 111-pitch complete game, allowing five runs on nine hits in seven innings. She also had 10 strikeouts.
During Friday’s game against Swain, they celebrated three Hiwassee Dam seniors: softball players Katie McNabb and Shelby Kester, as well as track and field athlete Miranda Landon.
The Lady Eagles finished their regular-season schedule with an overall record of 7-9, 5-7 in the Smoky Mountain Conference.
