Eagles get 2 conference wins in last week of hoops season

Hiwassee Dam – The Eagles boys basketball kicked off a busy week Feb. 6 by traveling to Highlands.

The Highlanders took a slim lead in the first quarter and ended ahead by one point. In the second, the Eagles regained the lead and scored 19 points to take a 29-20 lead to halftime.

The Eagles held Highlands to only four points in the third period. Using their momentum, the Eagles scored 17 points in the fourth period to win 55-39.

Four Hiwassee Dam players had points totals in double digits. Clay Davis led the Eagles with 13 points. Jonah Hamby and Kyle Taylor had 11 points each, with both making four two-point shots and going 3-3 on free throws, while Dawson Headley had 10 points.

On the Highlands side, Landon Green led the team with 11 points with one shot made from beyond the arch.

The Eagles traveled to Cherokee to take on the Braves on Thursday, when Hiwassee Dam lost a close game 82-78.

Hiwassee Dam fell behind early, but not by much as Cherokee ended the first quarter up 20-17. In the second quarter, the Eagles outscored the Braves to trail by one point at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Eagles outscored Cherokee again to take the lead into the fourth quarter. Cherokee had a strong final quarter to put away the close game and get the win. Hiwassee Dam fought to the end, but came up short.

Clay Davis had 26 points against Cherokee after making six 3-pointers and four field goals. Jonah Hamby reached the 20 point mark with 22 points on 10 field goals and he went 2-4 on free throws. Aiden Bennett also reached double digits in points with 14 points Thursday.

For Cherokee, Luke Smith led the way with 28 points. Michael Driver had 19 points and Jack Teesateskie added 10.

On Friday, the Eagles picked up their second conference win of the week against Nantahala. The Eagles dominated their way to a 92-48 win over the Hawks, the second time this season that they have scored 90 or more points in a game.

Clay Davis and Jonah Hamby led the Eagles with 20 points. Davis made four field goals, three 3-pointers and went 3-3 on free throws. Hamby made nine field goals and went 2-4 on his free throws.

Meanwhile, Aiden Bennett had 19 points on seven field goals, one 3-pointer and 2-2 on free throws. Dawson Headly was the fourth player on the Eagles to finish in double digits with five field goals and one 1-pointer that added up to 13 points.

For Nantahala, Cole McCoy had 25 points, as 18 of his points came in the second quarter. Dylan Baldwin also had double-digit points with 14.

The Eagles sit first in the Little Smoky Conference heading into next week’s tournament.
