Hiwassee Dam – The Eagles baseball team dropped two games last week; to Robbinsville, and one to non-conference opponent Copper Basin, Tenn.
In their first game of the week on April 16, they hosted Robbinsville and lost 10-1. The Black Knights got the scoring going early with two runs each in the first two innings. The Eagles scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth.
Neither team scored until the top of the seventh when Robbinsville scored six runs to put away the game. Robbinsville scored 10 runs on eight hits. Hiwassee Dam scored one run on two hits and had six errors.
Clay Davis had the Eagles’ fourth-inning run after he hit a double. Davis also had a stolen base. Carson Taylor had their other hit.
On the mound, Kyle Taylor pitched the first 5.2 innings and Dawson Headley pitched the final 1.1 inning. Taylor gave up four runs on five hits. He had one walk and threw seven strikeouts.
Headley gave up six runs on three hits and three walks. Taylor threw 102 pitches and Headley threw 37. Due to N.C. High School Athletic Association baseball pitch count rules, Taylor will not be able to pitch again until this week.
On Thursday, the Eagles headed to Copper Basin, Tenn., where they lost 7-3. Hiwassee Dam opened with two runs in the top of the first, then Copper Basin scored three in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. They maintained the lead the remainder of the game. After three straight scoreless frames, Copper Basin added one in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The Eagles scored one run in the top of the seventh, but could not rally to win. Hiwassee Dam had 11 hits, but only scored three runs.
Colton Berrong led the game in hits with three, while Clay Davis and Dawson Headley both had two. Dalton Kester, Kyle Taylor, Cole Elliott and Carson Taylor each had one hit apiece. Berrong, Noah Shields and Kyle Taylor each scored a run. Elliott and Kyle Taylor both had a stolen base.
Abel Penland pitched five innings and allowed seven runs on six hits. He gave up three walks and struck out seven. Isaiah Crisp pitched 0.1 innings and had one strikeout and three walks.
In their third game of the week, the Eagles lost 8-1 to Robbinsville on Friday.
The Black Knights led 5-1 through four innings and added three more in the sixth to secure the win. Hiwassee Dam scored one run on three hits.
The Eagles’ three hits were by Clay Davis, Colton Berrong and Carson Taylor.
The Eagles’ baseball team will play their next game Friday, when they host Cherokee at 4:30 p.m.
