Murphy – Murphy High School lost one of its icons last week as former Bulldogs player and coach at Mitch Myers passed away May 29.

Myers played on the 1970 state championship team. After finishing his degree at Western Carolina University, he returned to Murphy as an assistant coach and became head coach for the Bulldogs from 1978-82. He continued his coaching career with stints as a head football coach at Cherokee, Franklin and Hayesville high schools.

After retiring, Myers returned to the Murphy area, where he spent the rest of his life cattle farming and beekeeping. If you wanted to talk football, farming or beekeeping, he was always willing and able to oblige. Read his obituary on page 6A.
