Cats, Dogs staying course

So far this season Murphy has been the dominant men’s golf team in the Smoky Mountain Conference. Andrews golf has had some success, but the Wildcats have been limited due to having multi-sport athletes on the squad.

Andrews boys head golf coach Eric Duong said the Cats haven’t had a full team since their first match of the season.

“The kids missing would typically be my No. 1 and No. 3 spot. But, overall, we are steadily improving. Long way to go to be able to compete as a team in the conference, but definitely some positive bright spots,” Duong said.

Two players who have stood out to him are Brady Queen and Tucker Stalcup.

“My two freshmen have been leading the way for us. Brady [Queen] has a bright future in the game of golf and will be a bright spot for Andrews golf for years to come,” Duong said. ”Tucker [Stalcup], who has more recently started taking the game and wanting to improve more serious, has really impressed me by how much he’s improved over such a short time period of time. Looking forward to see how he continues to improve.”

Duong said the team is looking forward to the next match after spring break.

“This is such a great group, and I enjoy all the time I get to spend with them,” he said. “Even if we are just out for a practice round, I enjoy the time spent with the team.”

Murphy boys golf has been dominant in Smoky Mountain Conference play.

The Bulldogs picked up multiple match wins and have momentum heading into the final few tournaments before the conference championship and state playoffs. The Golden brothers, Connor and Brady, have regularly finished at the top of the individual standings, driving the Bulldogs to multiple wins this season.

Both teams will have one more match before the first round of the state 1A playoffs Thursday, April 25.
